Christmas is coming! At Search2Give we’re getting fully into the Christmas spirit and giving EVEN MORE money to charities. For each new searcher that uses Search2Give, we’ll give an extra 1p to charities and splitting it between those supported on our site.

At Search2Give we love the fact we’re helping charities for free, and we hope that our users will encourage their friends to spread the word about us this Christmas so we can give even more!

Get re-tweeting!

Merry Christmas!

So we’ve all had it. That wonderful moment when a street fundraiser approaches you in a very friendly way asking you to donate a bit to their charity. Most of the time we’ll fork up a bit of loose change to keep them happy and then be on our way.

This is how fundraising has traditionally been, but more and more charities are finding that it’s no longer the best way to go.

Now there are loads of different topics to address when you talk about fundraising, but I’m going to talk about one of the new and most exciting areas – charities working with businesses.

More and more we’re seeing some of the bigger businesses supporting charities, to the benefit of their own companies. It’s a common misconception for people to think that if a business partners with a charity and sends them donations, that charity somehow owes them something. On the contrary, a business-charity partnership should be mutually beneficial for both organizations.

In general a corporate partnership will work something like this:

  • A company pledges to give money to a charity
  • The charity will promote the company to it’s supporters (such as their shops, website, emails and social networks)
  • More customers will be driven to the company as a result

In practice these partnerships take place in many different ways. Affiliate marketing schemes are some of my favourite. An example would be Ecotricity’s partnership with Christian Aid. For every new customer that Christian Aid refers to them, Ecotricity pays them £25.

This isn’t rocket science. Done right, a corporate partnership should increase profits for the company while helping the charity. For businesses, working with charities is effectively just a different way of advertising for them. The fact that consumers are now caring more and more about who they shop from should give a clue to both businesses and charities.

More and more businesses are realizing that being ethical is actually a good thing for them, and are changing the way they run the business as a result. Charities won’t want to promote a business that is somehow ‘un-ethical’, but if they know that they’re referring their public supporters to an ethical one then it’s great for them – they are trying to make the world a better place after all.

As the number ‘ethical companies’ grows, charities should be actively looking to partner with them in order to further both of their goals. Rattling tins and public support is great, but it’s not enough on its own. I reckon the real difference in the world will be made by partnerships between businesses and charities.

Win-win relationships can and will go a long way.

Search2Give for World Aids Day
November 28th, 2009

As many of you readers may know, 1st December is World Aids Day 2009. This is a day to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and help get a bit of extra donations given to help prevent the disease.

At Search2Give we’re all about trying to make a real difference in the world, and it’s great to be one of the many supporting this initiative. Of course, we’ve added a Red Ribbon to our site.

We encourage you to support the National Aids Trust with Search2Give (and elsewhere obviously!) and help make a difference.

Hey all, I thought it was about time to write a bit about something we’re very interested in at Search2Give at the moment – the online donation platforms. They’re great, because they handle all the gift aid reclamation involved in donations, allowing charities to focus their time on doing their job. It also makes it a lot easier for anyone to give to charity.

You’ve probably all heard of JustGiving, the main online donation site, and the slightly less well known Bmycharity. Well now, there’s a new kid on the block – and Virgin Money Giving, and they’re going for very different and strong approaches to revolutionise online fundraising. So, it only makes sense to look at them all and find out which one is the best:

JustGiving

JustGiving has been the main online donation platform for charities for a number of years, and so far £546 million has been donated through them. You’ve got to hand it to them – they could have done worse. They’re brilliant at what they do – their site is really user-friendly, and they handle all the gift aid reclamation well. There’s one downside – these guys are a for-profit company.

Now, JustGiving charge a fee on all donations of 5%, and then credit card fees on top of that. So, potentially up to about 7% could be taken in donation fees. Lets do the maths: 5% of £546m is just over £27m in donation fees. Seems like a lot, but this has generally been accepted as an acceptable price to pay considering the great service they offer.

Virgin Money Giving

Virgin Money Giving officially launched a couple of months ago and are now in the process of registering loads of charities to be supported with them. The are a non-profit company charging a small fee on donations, (just like JustGiving) but only 2%. (As opposed to 5%)

It is also worth noting that they are part of the overall Virgin Group, who have a reputation of doing well in almost every business sector they enter into.

This all sounds great, but is that enough? Surely a few percent is not enough to get everyone to change to what they’re used to?

Well actually it is, for two simple reasons:

  1. Virgin are the official sponsor for the London Marathon 2010, the biggest charity fundraiser event in the UK.
  2. On the London Marathon page for this year, fundraisers are recommended to use Virgin Money Giving.

Bmycharity:

Bmycharity have been around for a while, and over £25 million has been given to charity through them. They have recently taken a very bold move – they have scrapped ALL donation fees. That’s right – they charge NOTHING on donations. All money goes straight to the charities.

All fees associated with running the company are now funded by selected sponsors and advertisers on their site.

In principle this sounds absolutely amazing. The real question is – can Bmycharity make enough money from advertising to cover all their costs? If they can, then these guys could be huge.

Which is best?

Before we get to this point it is worth noting one thing – for a charity to sign up on any of these sites they have to pay a registration fee of about £100. This could limit charities signing up to different sites.

Right now, JustGiving are saying that charities will continue to use them as their preffered donation platform because of their great service. If Virgin Money Giving and Bmycharity can match this service, then JustGiving are in trouble. As things are now, it’s only a matter of time before the number of donations through JustGiving decrease. They’ll have to change their business model – simple as that.

The real question is, can Bmycharity cover it’s costs? If it can, they should do very well. If not, then Virgin Money Giving seems a good way forward at this stage. It’ll be very interesting to see how this plays out.

Should JustGiving be afraid?

If you’ve been using Search2Give recently you may have noticed we’ve just revamped our results page a little bit. We now have new adverts that look far better.

For many wonderful reasons this means that we can give a lot more money to charities. ~2.5 times as much in fact. At Search2Give we’re pretty optimistic that this will help us reach our target of £10 raised per searcher per year.

We’ve been hard at work at Search2Give and we’ve recently added a new feature we think you’re going to love. Now every single charity in our database has its own unique web address.

This may sound a tad confusing, but in practice what it means is that anyone can get a link for their favourite charity and promote that charity within Search2Give. The link will take you to the Search2Give homepage automatically supporting that charity. For example: http://www.search2give.co.uk/support/?Stop%20The%20Traffik will take you to the homepage automatically supporting Stop The Traffik.

So now charities and supporters can use this link in their emails, blogs and social networks. We’re really excited about the results – it couldn’t get much easier to get people to support your charity! We’ve included the widget so you can get the link for your favourite charity below:

Did you know that you can get a special link to let your friends auto-support your favourite charity when they click on it?

Hello!

It’s been an interesting couple of weeks! Since launching on September 22nd, we’ve had about 6000 searches, and we have grown to a level of about 250 visitors a day.

One thing that took us by surprise was our advertising – Google AdSense, one of the most popular tools for monetizing websites out there, decided to simply stop working. We quickly found out that this has happened to thousands of sites on the internet without a single word from Google! Obviously, a charitable search engine that makes no money is a flawed model!

So, we’re currently using affiliate banners as a temporary advertising solution. We’re currently working on getting a much more sophisticated advertising system just like normal search engines have. Once this happens we’re confident that the amount raised for charity will shoot up.

We’ll keep you posted! We hope that you continue to use Search2Give for your favourite charity!

We love you guys.
